The Originals Season 2 Episode 1: Lost Hope

Out goes one enemy. In comes another.

On The Originals Season 2 Episode 1, Klaus and Hayley shook off four months of mourning to emerge from hiding and properly seek vengeance against those who forced them to send their daughter away.

Inspired by a reunion with Marcel, and spurred on by Elijah's diligence in tracking down all 12 daylight rings that were sapping Klaus' power on each full moon, our heroes teamed up and took out the Guerrera Werewolves.

Their plan worked perfectly. It was quick. It was unexpected. It featured a classic Elijah moment when he slowly and carefully explained to Francesca why he actually was permitted to enter her house - and it also enabled Hayley to look into the eyes of her arch rival, ignore her pleas for mercy and end her life.

So all is good now, right? These werewolves are no longer in control of the Quarter and it's time to party in New Orleans again? Not exactly.

First, Hayley said she felt no real relief. In fact, she felt shame over what she had become, a "monster" instead of a "mother." She noted that Elijah was looking at her differently and she longed for the day when she could hold Hope again.

Hayley's bond with Elijah has been broken by her transformation, though one with Klaus has been formed. Toward the end of the hour, her baby daddy explained that the werewolves view her as a "Queen" and she should act accordingly.

Secondly, yes, the Guerreras are no longer in power.

But Esther (in the guise of a teenage witch) is scheming against her children... well, her other children. She's working with a resurrected Finn and a resurrected Kol, the latter of whom is disguised as dude named Kaleb, someone who worked his charm with Davina in an early scene.

Ah, yes, Davina. She's trying to find a spell that would separate her friends (e.g. Josh) from Klaus' sire line so she can unleash her pet, Mikael, on his nemesis without all those he turned dying as well.

So even with Francesca dispatched of, there's plenty for Klaus and company to fear. But they will take on these enemies together, as a family, Klaus emphasized in a moving speech to Hayley.

ELSEWHERE:

Cami has been sleeping with Marcel, but she ended that naked relationship in order to focus more on actually being a human.
This included meeting with a student advisor, who ends up being Finn (unbeknownst to Cami, of course).
Marcel is recruiting a new vampire army, giving speeches to compelled human beings and hoping his words stick somewhere deep inside of them. We see one girl return to his apartment late in the premiere, seemingly ready to fight.
Elijah looked really good in a suit.

So it was quite a busy and intense opening hour, but what else did you expect?
