The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 1 Recap: Trouble at Terminus
Let there be no mistake: The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 1 was as cringe-inducing, intense and gory as any hour in this show's history.
So it was therefore awesome!
Yes, those at Terminus are cannibals, as many have believed ever since we met them on Season 4. But the premiere offered up an unexpected twist:
These people may now be savages, but only because they were forced to adapt to a world where the concept of being a "good guy" went out the door a very long time ago. When there's no peace and no sanctuary, what is one to do?
That said, come on. Rick and the survivors aren’t cattle. They weren’t gonna be devoured without a major fight.
With our heroes and heroines lined up for the throat-cutting slaughter, Carol was able to come in and mess everything up. In the best possible way.
Having grown as a character in such a tremendous manner over the course of the drama, Carol made like a walker to save her friends, covering herself in blood and guts, and then proved she's actually a pretty great show.
From there, we were treated to a battle at Terminus that was as visceral an experience of blood, bullets and biters as we’ve witnessed to date.
It was led by a ridiculously intense Rick, who led the charge with a strong command, showing no hesitation because he knew his enemies wouldn't do so. Seeing those bodies hanging likes pieces of meat only served to inspire. (And gross us out, as well.)
Meanwhile, Tyreese found himself in a fascinating predicament while waiting for Carol. He didn’t want to kill; he really didn’t want to change; and he yearned to keep on being the peaceful guy he’s always been.
The exchange he had with the guy tied up emphasized these points, much as most of the episode did, but when you mess with the baby... you get the Tyreese.
It was exciting to see him burst through the door, but it was also heartbreaking to see him end up actually the guy. He saved Judith while proving that the world really has changed.
But violence wasn’t the only thing on display during the premiere. Emotion was heightened as well. Daryl broke down over seeing Carol, while Rick’s hug for getting to see Judith was a sentimental way to conclude the hour.
Where is everyone headed now? To D.C. with Eugene? Maybe. But we were satisfied enough this week to just see everyone come back together.
Have we seen the last of Garret? Another good question. Watch The Walking Dead online to see if you can answer it and comment on the premiere below.
