Gotham

Gotham Season 1 Episode 4 Recap: Welcome to Arkham

Who is Oswald Cobblepot?
That question was posted often to Jim on Gotham Season 1 Episode 4, each time by a fiancee anxious to know more about the man she's about to marry.
But James Gordon won't let Barbara into that world - partly for her own protection; partly, we'd imagine, for his own sanity - and it's unclear if this relationship can survive Jim's secrets.
It's also unclear how to even answer that question.
Who is Oswald Cobblepot? He's a conniving killer who arranged for some thugs to rob Maroni's restaurant this week, simply so he could be a hero in saving some of the gangster's money, earning himself a promotion as a result.
Oswald then killed the folks he hired to do the killing and took the rest of the money for himself.
But he also told Jim that a war is coming and he wants to help. He wants to essentially serve as Jim's criminal informant. Yes, Oswald is likely in all of this for himself. He's probably just playing both sides.
But Robin Lord Taylor portrays the villain with so many layers that it's easy to sometimes be convinced of Oswald's vulnerability. It's easy to think he's just misunderstood... until you see him kill one innocent person after another.
Elsewhere, the episode was titled "Arkham" because it centered around a real estate battle for that section of the city.
Comic and movie fans, of course, are familiar with this location. For the time being, however, it's just serving as an example of how Falcone and Maroni are battling for control of Gotham.
The latter mostly won here because the Mayor announced that Arkham will be split into affordable housing (Falcone's territory) and waste management (Maroni's territory), which means Maroni is making a move to become a major player.
We also saw Fish Mooney hire a new singer for her establishment, telling right-hand man that she needed a "weapon." We'll need to wait and see how she plans to use this female "weapon."
The bad guys were all making moves against each other this week, while Bruce tried to keep up in order to understand how his parents' murder fits into everything. That's an unknown wild card at the moment.
What did everyone else think of this installment? Will Jim and Barbara last? Did you miss Cat?
