The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 5 Recap: Harsh Truth
Ready to take a road trip with Abraham, Eugene, Rosita, Maggie, Glenn and Tara?
Such was the basis for The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 5, an installment of television's most popular series that featured heartbreaking memories and a constant threat of zombies.
We kicked off the hour with the sextet hanging on the church bus, everything going as well as can be: Maggie and Glenn were hoping Daryl and Carol were back with Rick, soon to join them.
Abraham was joking about Rosita shaving him until he was “dolphin smooth.” Heck, Tara even tried to engage Eugene in conversation.
But then, just as Glenn was trying to glean information from Eugene, the bus flipped over.
From there, we witness an Abraham-based flashback in which we learned that his violent protection caused his family to leave him. When he awoke, he and the survivors had to fight off walkers who were drawn to the sound of the crash.
Abraham then shot down Eugene’s suggestions that they head back to the church, insisting that “retreat means we lose” and assuring Glenn that he’s “fit as a damn fiddle” when asked about his state of mind.
So the group took refuge at the library, where Glenn and Abraham bonded over the importance of the mission and where Eugene watched Tara and Abraham have sex.
But Tara responded calmly, just telling him to please step and even encouraging him to think more of himself and his post-apocalyptic survival skills.
Eugene responded by admitting that he put crushed glass in the bus’ fuel line to delay their progress to D.C. Why? Because he believe he had “no value” if he didn’t save the world.
Tara tried to tell him this wasn't true and that they're all friends now and that she would keep his secret.
Abraham got everyone out and going again first thing in the morning. However, after fending off some more walkers, they ran into even MORE walkers and only Abraham wanted to forge ahead. He grabbed Eugene and started dragging him away, promoting him to finally yell and admit: I’m not a scientist! I lied!
Huh? “I just know things,” Eugene said, explaining that he wanted to convince people he could cure the outbreak in order to have protection on his way to D.C., which he assumed would be the safest destination.
Abraham responded by punching Eugene out cold and viewers got to see a final flashback. It revealed that Abraham was about to kill himself after he found his family’s remains… only for Eugene to come stumbling up, zombies right behind him.
Abraham saved Eugene and this is when/why Eugene started to lie. So the mission saved Abraham’s life. Which means a huge lie saved his life. Ouch. Talk about harsh truth, huh?
